Year 2 Maths Help

Submitted by Wendy (07-11-2012)

Hi,
My son is going into Yr 3 in 2012 and he has struggled with learning the new concepts of multiplication and division. I want to help him during the holidays but I want to replicate how he is taught at school (NSW Curriculum). Are there any good resources for teaching these concepts. I would also like to reinforce addition and subtraction too.
Kind regards, Wendy

For both addition/subtraction and multiplication/division, teach the fact families.
Always use manipulatives. Start from the bottom up (easiest to the hardest). Using the fact families will help your child connect the 3 numbers. For example, 2, 3, 5 for add/sub; 2, 3, 6 for mul/div.

Take it slowly. Make your child feel confident. Practice, practice, practice. Review, review, review.

Good luck!

Hey Wendy,

For addition and subtraction, I would get them to count various objects around the house. Then take some away and ask him how much he has? Then do the same by adding more objects?

I have also found addition and subtraction flashcards work well for recalling basic facts.

Here is an excellent resource for recognising dotted number formations and number clusters

For multiplication I would teach them the commutative law. For example 5x4 is the same as 4 x 5. You could illustrate this to him by drawing 5 groups of 4. Then you flip the page to the other side which would reveal 4 groups of 5.

You could explore each multiplication by completing them on a hundreds chart. This will allow you to discuss patterns.

Finally, for division, I would talk about how it is to share equally. Maybe model some simple sharing between you two and move to more complex sharing.

You could then talk about how division is the inverse of multiplication so that they can see the connection.

I hope this helps!

A great resource with activities and explanation about how multiplication facts are interrelated is 'Tackling Tables' by Paul Swan. It is one of my best (affordable) teaching resources and the only way I can answer this question without suggesting getting a degree in teaching! Although said in jest, this book is tremendous for explaining strategies. Good luck!

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
