Year 1/2 Morning Session

by Kathryn Davies
(Adelaide)

Our morning begins at 8:30am

I have a morning computer roster and students on their 'computer morning' day partake in literacy or maths related games. This runs from 8:30 to 9:00am

The rest of the students come into the classroom and unpack their belongings. They then partake in a 'quiet' activity for 15 minutes.
*handwriting practice chart
*free drawing
*free reading
*finish off any unfinished work

At 8:45 the bell rings and all students (besides the computer children) come down to the floor for roll call. I then divide the children off to parents for parent reading. This goes for 15 minutes. Each parent has 3 or four children and they listen to each child read. During this time I listen to children read (running records) or test children on their sight words or sight sums.

At nine o'clock we all gather on the carpet and the children go into their guided reading groups. This runs for 45 mintues. These groups are based on student reading recovery levels.

After guided reading we all come together for shared reading. This is where we inquire into a Big Book and work through the four resources model with the children, with a different focus each day. The shared reading session runs for 15 minutes.

At 10am we all have a 'brain break'. This break is a ten minute fruit break. Following fruit break we have our daily fitness session.

The final block of time before recess also has a literacy focus. Depending on the day.. we do Spelling, Grammar, Writing.. etc
