Writing lesson

by Kylie
(Australia)

I was just browsing quickly through the lesson plans section and thought I would add a lesson I did last year in my first Block.

My supervising teacher asked me to come up with a fun writing activity. I photocopied some pages with Dear Mrs Malone... at the top, and the first line of a letter that read...My favourite things are..... and the bottom of the page just "From....."

I used an old shoes box cut a slot in the front and taped the lid on painted it red and wrote mail box on it. I provided envelopes and blank stickers for the children to make their own stamps and they all wrote me a letter, addressed it to Mrs Malone, and made a stamp and posted it.

I had bought in a few of my favourite things to show and share with the children and that began my activity.

That night I used a large cardboard sheet and wrote about my favourite things back to the children and how I loved reading their letters.

I left the mail box and envelopes and stickers for the children and blank paper, so they could write letters at any time they chose when they had free activities. I made a point at the end of my prac to write a letter to the kindy class letting them know how much I enjoyed my week with them and how I would miss seeing their smiling faces each day.

Well I thought I would share this as it bought about lots of conversation and sharing from the children and was a successful lesson.

Letter Writing
by: Kat

That is such a clever way to get kids wanting to write. Extending on from that - the school could make their own post box and place it somewhere on the school grounds (Making sure it is locked away each night & weekend so it isn't vandalized).

Kids can be all given a pen friend from another class and or grade and write to each other. Once a week a different class gets to sort and deliver the mail to the other children.

I love that idea. You could even have the students start writing to one another too.
