What Happens to Helvetica Hippo

I love the book "The Escape of Marvin the Ape" by Caralyn Buehner, Mark Buehner (Illustrator)!

It follows the ape, Marvin through his day 'out' of the zoo. He does all kinds of 'normal' things (for humans). The book ends when Helvetica Hippo Dashes out (of the zoo). Leading me to one of my favorite writing activities.

Depending on the age and ability of my students, I assign them to write about what Helvetica does on her day out. They love to illustrate, and write a whole new book for Helvetica.

If they are REALLY into this, I have had them make their own book, or we collaborate on a class book.

It has always been very successful at getting reluctant writers, writing. Happy reading!
