Ideas for Using Thematic Unit Word Cards

OUR THEME WORD CARDS ARE IDEAL FOR.....
- Themed word booklets for children's reference.

I LOVE THIS IDEA! (also ideal for sight words)
It's simple - when printing out each set of words. Set your printer to any of the following settings 2 in 1 , 4 in 1, 9 in 1, or even 16 in 1 if you would like mini mini booklets. Here are some pictures to help...
Staple books together at the top .Different sized books are ideal for different uses....**Hang the larger books on hooks along a wall for ease of reference access.
**The medium size books are ideal for group activities
**The small size mini books are ideal as individual children's reference books / take home books.

- Wall displays / themed bulletin boards.

Make sets of word cards.
I copy these onto white card or paper, sometimes then onto a coloured card background, cut them out, then laminate for long term use.
Ideal for kindergarten, preschool and primary classroom activities.
- Promote topic/theme discussions and brainstorming.
- Most card templates have extra blank spaces to include your own words.
-
General spelling, cloze, phonics and word card activities (see '101 Ways to use Word Cards' - a fantastic word study activity resource.)

Make puzzles of each card by cutting through using different shaped cuts.
- The children would refer to the appropriate theme booklet, box or pocket during general writing sessions to double check their spelling.
- HOW TO STORE YOUR WORD CARDS...

Each theme set has a picture code related to that theme so that the words do not get mixed up and are easily sorted.
I keep all my theme card sets in a labelled hanging pocket system, I have also seen them in cut down milk cartons, tins, and those small plastic crates available from cheap shops etc. Each theme set has a label which can be used for identification.

What others are saying...
I bought a shoe hanger from a cheap shop and use that to house my flash cards in the classroom. (A large plastic sheet with little storage pockets on it. Perfect size for the cards to slip into with the label pinned to the front). When doing a particular theme, I remove those cards for display, but the rest are always there for the kids to use,
