Tabletop Activities

Submitted by Admin (08-11-2012)

I teach P-3. I'd really appreciate it if somebody could please give me examples of what tabletop activities for early childhood might be?

I'd like to be able to give my Preps something constructive to go on with while I am with the 1, 2 and 3 class.
Thanks.

Hi Josie,
I know this is now a bit old but I hope it is still of help.
Even though this year I have a straight class I still use this strategy for when I am busy with a group or kids finish early.
I have a series of matching games, wipeable games, silly sentences, word/ picture sorts, problem solving tasks, reading tubs, handwriting practice sheets, spy glasses word find, free writing, puzzles etc etc (any independent activity with some sort of educational benefit). I place each of the activities in a plastic hang up bag (through library stores) and hang them on a portable clothes hanger.
As children finish their work they know to go and take one of the activities and work on them.
The kids love it and it provides me with time to work with groups without being disturbed!
Hope this helps.

Try cutting activities like , cutting out two halves of different shapes and gluing them together on paper to make whole shape.

Cut out pictures of fruit for example and glue them on the dotted outline of their picture

Draw three cloud shapes on a piece of paper and have children draw and turn them into three different things (eg spider, sheep, steam train...)

Laminated dotted pictures for children to trace over and wipe off.

Trace around shape templates (circle, square, star, triangle etc) on different coloured paper , then cut out shapes and glue them together to make a picture. Later tell class what you made a picture of.

Use peg boards and coloured pegs to copy pictures on cards or make own pictures.

Use tangram cards (from K-3 site) and let children make pictures, They can talk about their picture later to class. Either use laminated tangrams or have them cut and paste their own paper copies.

Hi Josie,
I teach PP and these are some of the activities my children do independently. All of these could be linked with a theme or as a letter focus etc.

Free collage - you can allow them freedom to the craft items or be directive and only provide a limited amount.

Cutting and pasting activity - linked to a letter or number eg: make glasses for 'g',

Box construction using recycable materials

Construction toys : Stix, lego, tile blocks, shape blocks, interstars, mobilo - the children can then record what they did in a journal etc.

Games - eg: memory; number, letter sort; lotto, bingo etc (once the children are taught the rules)

Listening post - taped story - lends itself to recording what they learnt or their feelings about the story, through a drawing or writing depending on their capabilities.

white board or blackboard play using magnets / markers or chalk.

Focus Letter or number worksheet

Play dough - using laminated sheets for letter or number reinforcing, I also have fine motor skill sheets eg: foods for different animals. Each type of food requiring different hand actions to complete.

Letter tile play

Mini books - word match from word wall (later in the year)

Colouring in / drawing

These are just a few. Hope they help.

Liz

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
