Subtraction Flashcards Ideas...

  • Use the subtraction language cards (take away) before moving on to the subtraction symbol cards.

  • Print and laminate for long term use.  Print on to different coloured card to separate levels, or processes, for example, addition, multiplication, division.  Have them all set up in containers for children or teachers to grab at any time.

  • OK, these cards are then great for all sorts of subtraction games and activities.  They are particularly useful as a 'constant', along with other equation processes during daily maths activity / task time.

  • Use the laminated numeral cards to represent the final answers to the number sentence cards.

  • This resource also includes spare blank cards for you to write on extra number sentences.

  • At a later stage you could also reverse the addition games to create these subtraction equations.  For example, after using 2 green popsticks and 5 red popsticks to make 7,  use this set up to create 7 - 5 = 2, or 7 - 2 = 5.

  • Make smaller copies for children to cut and paste into their maths books.  Children then draw a pictorial representation of each number sentence card.  For example, start with 6 jellybeans, cross out 2.

  • Children find all the number sentences which equal a particular number.  Use the numeral cards - choose a numeral, children then find all the subtraction cards which equal this numeral.

  • Use objects, counters, anything really to represent the number sentences.  Here are some more ideas....

  • use plastic bowling sets - children bowl - find the number sentence card which matches their bowl.  For example - started with 10 pins standing, I knocked 7 down, now I have 3 left....    10 - 7    Numeral card   3

  • paper plate with 2 different sorts of 'plastic' food.  Start with 9, Sue ate 3, etc.

  • connecting plastic blocks, unifix cubes.

  • popsticks standing in sand or playdough.

  • pegs on a sheet of card.

  • coloured beads threaded on string.

  • Use a number line to count back.....for example, start on 5 count back 3.
