Story Stick

by Donna

This is a great activity for story retelling and sequencing.

After reading and discussing a particular story many times so that the children know it quite well, make a story circle where all children sit in a circle.

One child or yourself starts off retelling the story with the Title such as Year 1's version of "The Three Little Pigs".

The person talking also holds the 'story stick'. I have seen a brightly painted wooden boomerang used as a story stick but you could let your (or your children's) imagination go in terms of what was used for the stick.

Once the title has been retold that person passes the 'story stick' on to another (does not have to be the child next to them) and they retell the next part of the story and so on and so on.

This activity works really well to reinforce certain genres - for example it could even be used for procedures, lists, invitations, and lots more.

Once this activity is well practiced and children are comfortable with it you could also use it to make up class stories to be recorded as the children make it up. They can then use this as a base for their own story writing.

Cheers

I am studying to become a teacher and i think this is a fantastic idea! In one of my assignments it requires me to encourage children to use their imagination with both oral language and listening skills!

This was the perfect idea for a group story for my assignment! thankyou so much!
