SPLAT - Sight Word Game

by Denise

This has been a fun way to drill and practice sight word recognition. I have created sight word cards. I placed 'hook only' velcro on the back and attached them to a pin up board.

I bought two fly swatters. Chn challenge each other at the board. The teacher or a chosen leader (you can choose a more capable student) to spell or say the word. The two challenging students scan the board looking for the word.

The first one to swat the word and read it correctly is the winner. The other child then chooses the next challenger by handing the swatter over.

The reigning champion is challenged until another child out swats him/her. The rest of the class is watching and is bursting at the seams because they have already spotted the word and they can't give any clues.

The velcro on the back of the words allows me to jumble the words to vary the organisation of the words. I also change the words every term.

Splat

We play Splat, too. But just use sight word flashcards. There is a flashcard that has the word--Splat on it. The children keep all the cards they read correctly. But when they come to the word--Splat, they have to give me all the cards they have collected at that point. The ones with the most flashcards wins.

Great game !!

We also play the same game in our class but the words are on the back of flies. I have also colour coded the eye of the fly to the colour on the word card e.g. green eyes and the words are written in green so the sight words are in groups of difficulty.

This is wonderful

I love this one. Children learn best when they are having fun. Well done. I'm off to buy some fly swatters.

I have a similar game but the words are written on a lily pad shape and spread out on the ground. the two challenging students face each other and use their hands like the swatter
