IDENTIFYING US– A Space Theme...
What do we know about Space? Brainstorm ideas into categories. What do we need to find out? Outline plan of unit.
Name and design the planet you are traveling to. This will be your community. Send permission note home to parents informing them of our “plans for Space travel” every Wednesday afternoon!
Organise what you need to take and what you want to take. Consider the climate and environment you are going to..dry, hot, wet, windy, sunny, dark?? Provisions for shelters on arrival.
Design a flag for your planet. Explain that a flag often represents something special about the country it represents.
Students organise who they are going to take with them and provide reasons for their inclusion. Encourage a variety of community workers and family/friends.
Design your form of travel (to be made as art activity) and your uniform for traveling into space. Critically analyse your designs and those of others. Consider space and comfort of passengers you are taking.
We have touched down and unpacked and organised shelters. Time to have a meeting and decide on important things to help you all get along. Making of RULES. Free time-what groups will be allowed for leisure? Sport? Art? Religion? Other? Why allow these groups on your planet? Needs of groups.
What will you need on your planet for these groups? e.g. swimming pool, golf course, sand hills, craters, buildings? etc
Think of what group you would like to belong to on your planet. Invent names for space groups. What is so special about your group? What does your group do and why do you like to belong to it? What do you wear for identification, equipment you use, describe where you meet, what your rules are, benefit of belonging.
What would happen if you broke the rules? (scenarios) Preparation of 'My Space Odyssey' unit of work into plastic pocket book ready for presentation.
