Show and Tell

by Sue
(Gold Coast)

I am seeking ideas for my prep class for oral language experiences other than show and tell that will involve even those reluctant talkers. This year our show and tell items have been about the letter of the week we are studying which has been good, 5 kids a day, but it's the same kids who present each week and even though I keep it short and sweet it's still rather boring for all and the audience gets restless....

For the past few years I have had a mystery bag which one child takes home each day. They then lead the class by letting them ask questions. They get very good at asking questions which give information, which letter does it start with, what is it made from, and so on. The kids love sitting on the seat in front of the class, and deciding when the class has asked enough questions and can now have guesses. I usually limit the guesses to 5.
At the end of the time the student has their photo taken with their object. The kids love to fill out their page for the Mystery Bag (which is put into a display folder). The proforma has:
In the mystery bag I hid a __________.
It started with the letter ________.
It was ________ (describing word, such as colour).
They draw a picture and photo is added later.

Home work bags (ie sorting, measurement, office worker) with Journal entries. When they come in they share the journal and their experience with that specific homework. Also Student of the Week Posters! Happy Learning! Lil' Scholars University

HI Sue
I use this great idea from a book called "I Love Letters". I send home 2 'happy bags' a day and those children put something in the bag to bring for show and tell. The twist with this one is that the children and their parents fill out a rhyming clue for the item and it gets read out to the rest of the class to guess what is in the bag. It is a nice way to focus on rhyming words and we record all of the guesses on a chart. The audience responses will also let you know who has the concept of rhyming and who doesn't. After several guesses the surprise item comes out of the bag and the child talks about it as per normal show and tell.

A great idea is photos, children are happy to talk about people that they love or experiences that they enjoyed.

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
