Repetition and Drilling

I am very interested in reading others thoughts about the use of repetition and drilling in the early years - is there a place for this?

What are your thoughts? - Thanks

Just make it fun - but make it daily!

An easy way to transfer sounds knowledge to writing is to make some picture cards of CVC words. My preppies have about fifty. They then "stretch out" the sounds to write the words.

We make them together almost every day - with magnetic letters and letter tiles. It's also a free time activity with magnetic picture cards and little whiteboards & pens. They love it!

This skill then transfers to spelling in journal writing etc.

I am in a Pre Primary setting in Perth and my class have made amazing progress this semester in learning their initial sounds and letter names and sounds. I am sure it is because we play lots of different games using the alphabet as the basis. We make it loads of fun and the children often play the games in free time. We go over the letter names and sounds every day but sometimes it is only for 5 mins. Now I just need to transfer this to their writing!!!

Drill Doesn't Kill

I think it is fine, after all children learn through repeating experiences over and over again. However, it has to be done in a fun and interesting way! Games such as bingo for spelling words (in lower primary) and puzzles using mathematical skills which the children played daily is much more effective in engaging the children than "cat, c-a-t cat." Simple games can even be introduced in early childhood settings, involving labeling or matching words and numbers. The key is, make it enjoyable!

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
