Reception Smart Board Ideas
Submitted by Megan (06-11-2012)
I am very excited and fortunate to have a new Reception class starting next week. (I have been doing contracts and relief teaching for the last 2 years, so I'm looking forward to us all starting fresh together!)
Whilst I've already got certain activities I enjoy using on the Smartboard and have Jolly Phonics etc all organized I can't seem to find a good website or any info to help me set up an interactive "Morning Calendar" or other useful things that Receptions would love. (Oh dear!)
Does anyone have any wonderful suggestions?
Thank you so much.
Megan

Just thought it would be good to have Nursery Rhyme Sight Words (as it is a part of the Australian Curriculum)

I would live to have a collection of daily activities type sequencing pictures, such as getting up in the morning, making breakfast, eating an apple or dinner, going down a slide, building with blocks etc. and also a set for nursery rhymes.

One of the best ways to find children\'s strengths is to ask the other children. If you play the \"hot seat game\", where you ask the children to describe another, with no name given, just good things about them, you often learn all sorts of things that you didn\'t know were happening. Also I often get the child with a particular \"strength\" to go off and assist a buddy who needs help along those lines- makes for a very interesting conversation. After a while, everyone knows that ***** is good at blending, so they go and ask for help. Makes lots of smiles all over. what a clever woman you are to ask for strengths, when you yourself are feeling a little low. You need your own magic stick. It\'s one of those wands with glitter inside, when you shake it, you see the glitter feel happy and smile. Holding this stick many of my children have found the answer using the magic from the stick. Well done. Barbara.

What others are saying...
I use Reading Eggs. The kids love it but it does require a subscription after your trial is complete. It's made by the same people as Mathletics.
Copacabana has some great educational games and activities.
Toy Theater also has some great educational games.
We mainly use it for maths.
As for a morning routine ... I made my own. There are some great tools in the Notebook 10 gallery. There is a calendar interactive tool. If you drag it onto the screen and click the 'generate' button it will produce a calendar that fills the screen. From there I set up some weather pictures at the bottom of the screen and a cross to cross out the days. Right click to infinitely clone the pictures then the kids can drag them into the squares as appropriate.
I also mark birthdays with a birthday cake. I use the properties tab to select a colour for my calendar.
There are many ideas for marking the roll. Some people have kids names in a star, rocket, flower etc and the student places their item on a background picture as they are called. You can also create 'Is here' and 'Is not here' boxes for the kids to put their icons in.
For days of the week, I made a series of infinitely cloned rectangles labelled Monday - Sunday (brightly coloured of course) and the kids move them into the appropriate positions - Yesterday was _________, Today is ___________, Tomorrow will be __________.
Have a play. There are many possibilities. Start basic and add as you learn. Have fun! :) Hope this helped.
Thankyou for your comments - and congratulations Megan - receptions are so much fun - it is so awesome to share their huge and quick growth into the world of learning.
I am not smartboard minded but have one so will be trying all your comments so please keep them coming.
Try http://www.communication4all.co.uk/
They have sign in or self registration lessons already made up and there are also some lessons with morning routines (weather etc)
Most of the site is free, however, some story packs attract a small fee
Good luck!

Try Starfall. It has an interactive calendar suitable for that age. It is American, so a few things don't line up, but it is ok. It also has some phonics activities on it. Good luck!
