Promotion Ideas

Submitted by Sue (Melbourne, Australia) (09-11-2012)

Hi,
I teach at a primary school where numbers are dropping and we don't have a feeder kinder.

Does have any good promotion ideas to promote our school in the community as we are looking to increase enrolments and not face closure in the future?

Thanks and I look forward to any ideas you are willing to share.

Sue

Any way that you can implement a free preschool/transition program is a sure fire way to boost your numbers.
Some ways to do this are;
* interns from universities
* splitting a kinder class for 2 hours per week to release your kinder teacher to run a transition/preschool class (not ideal but parents are pretty good about it as they loved it when their chn were in preschool and had that orientation to school). Also good to eyeball the chn before they attend to organise Early Support services and referrals.
Some other ideas include;
* promote ties to local preschools and early childhood services. Offer to come in and give "School Readiness" information sessions for parents. Develop info sharing profiles to carry from EC setting to school. Offer your school for "big school" excursions from early childhood centres.
* develop links with local paper. Regularly send updates of upcoming events at your school for those "slow news" days where they need to fill a slot (make sure you go through your media dept if necessary)
* have your students create a Welcome to our School DVD for prospective students, new Kinders and their families and new staff). It's very child centred and will show off all the great things you are doing. Relatively cheap too even in a letter!
Hope some of this may help - good luck

The biggest thing that you need to do is ensure that rumours do not start about your school closing. As soon as parents think that a school is closing (whether it is or not) they will not send their children there which is understandable. Ensure that the staff and parent groups do not start gossiping about the school closing. Your Principal should talk to every adult involved in the school community about the wonderful future of the school and future programs so that positive thoughts and comments can be shared in the community rather than comments about closure.

It is a great time of year to give Christmas Cards to local businesses, surrounding kindys and families who live near your school. Each child creates a Christmas Card with a special message such as, "Merry Christmas from the ___ Primary School Community." Perhaps place your school's logo and phone number etc on the back to promote your school at the same time. You will need to ask the families in your school to deliver them to local businesses and letter box drops. The lower primary teachers could visit local kindy's to drop off the Christmas cards and chat with the kindy teachers about how you can work together more. Perhaps the kindy children could visit your school and the reception/prep children could visit the kindy and sing a song and share some work.
p.s. Make sure the children do not write their names on the Christmas cards.

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
