Print Walk

by Jeanie
(Brisbane)

From early year One I have always encouraged the children to go on a print walk around the room.

They take their writing book and pencil with them and copy anything they can see e.g. charts. name tags, book titles etc. As the year progresses the tasks can become more specific e.g. go on a print walk and copy any words that start with f, end with ing, have six letters in them etc.

This is a great way for children to write without pressure and even those who are reluctant have heaps of fun with this. It also helps children become aware of where words are in the classroom, making it a virtual and visual dictionary for them in more formal writing tasks.

We certainly are. Our school year goes from the end of January to mid December. (We do have 3 other 2 week breaks during the year as well as our summer holiday)

Word detectives
by: Anonymous

My Preps love this sort of activity as well. We get our clipboard folders and pencils and pretend to be detectives. We look for words that start with the particular letter we have just learned about - sometimes for words that end with that letter to mix it up. They love it and when we come back together we count how many words we found, look at the words and guess or predict what they are etc.

Print Walk - The first week of school
by: Carrie Scampton

I plan to use this strategy in my new 1&2 grade at the end of the first week. The children will walk around the room and write about: one item they like in the room (a picture, toy, book etc), one item they hadn't noticed before, the name of one person they previously knew and the name of one new friend. This way, the students will interact with each other and begin noticing, more closely, where items are in the room.

To make this more fun and exciting give each child a small magnifying glass and paper on a clip board.
