Preschool Counting Games

Submitted by Cristina (11-10-2012)

To teach my preschoolers how to count, we hold hands and form a circle and sing "Ring 'round the Rosie" and then when we reach the end of the song everybody stays on the floor and starts counting. For me it has helped me a lot especially counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Kids will love this. Try it!!

Like Cristina, we play a counting game that my Prep (5yrs) kids love. They stand in a circle and choose 3 magc numbers e.g. 5 10 15. the kids count on around the circle if they say a magic number they go and wash their hands for lunch or bob down. we keep going around and the circle gets smaller until we have a final winner who we make a big fuss of because of all the counting they have done. the kids love it and ask to play everyday.AB

Hi Cristina
Welcome to the Teachers Zone.
With this preschool counting game, do you mean that the children only 'fall down' after you count to a certain number, or do they 'fall down' and then count together on the floor?

It sounds like a lovely idea to motivate the children.

Maybe after singing 'Ring a Rosie' the children could stay standing, and start counting as you gently tap each child on the head, they fall down.

Children could also do the tapping.

Thanks for your first post Cristina, we look forward to more.

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
