Prep One Composite
Submitted by Leigh (Brisbane, Australia) (09-11-2012)
I have just graduated and my first class is a prep/year one composite. Can anyone give me some hints for the first few weeks and how you schedule a day with a composite class? The composite part is a little daunting and trying to ensure I am challenging all the students.

Year 1 Telling the time

With a year one class we played What's the Time Mr Wolf - but instead of the wolf (myself) calling out 'It's one o'clock!" I used a clock with moveable hands.

Storing Teacher Themed Resources
Submitted by Jennifer
I am having a major sort out! Has anyone got any ideas for how to organise teaching theme resources?

I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!

What others are saying...
Hello,
I am very excited about teaching a Prep/1/2 this year in a small rural school. I would also appreciate any advice or tips that experienced teachers had to offer.
Thank you, Paula
A great book to buy is transition tips and tricks.
Hi! I taught a Year 1/2 class in WA which would be similar to Prep/One over east. I did group rotations, that was the most helpful in dealing with the learning differences. To start with you may want to mix the ages, because the Ones will know more of the routines and be able to assist the Preps, instead of constantly asking you for help.
A day might look like: Morning - group mat session, greetings and talk about calender, day, etc., News/Show and Tell for 1/5th of the students on roster, then Literacy centres, Maths groupings after recess, then various other subjects the rest of the day.
Good Luck! Laura
Hi Leigh
I am in the same boat - graduate, prep/1 multiage, rural QLD school. I'm feeling really overwhelmed about everything, and also trying to get my head around structuring a multi-age environment.
If anyone has some great advice I'd also love to hear it!
I'm particularly interested in ideas for the very first day of school and week.
Thanks so much in advance!
Matilda
Have you been placed at a private or state school out of interest?
If I can be of any assistance re ideas I have done a previous post on this website re 'my first week in prep' if that is of any help.
Composite claasses are the best! It sounds daunting at first, but it really is easy once you get your head around it.
I teach a Kindy/Pre-Primary/Year One class in country WA and I love it!
