Positive Behaviour Stickers in Kindergarten

by Diana
(Baulkham Hills, NSW, Australia)

I have a Kindergarten class and have used these sticker desk charts for a couple of years now. They have 20 circles, which fit the little stickers perfectly. Each child has their own sticker chart on their desk and they receive stickers as positive reinforcement for all the great things they do!

When all 20 circles have been filled, they get to choose from my treasure box - a box of goodies I have picked up (and continue to do so continually!) from The Reject Shop, GoLo, markets etc. They love to choose from here.

Educational value - particularly from a Maths point of view - they are constantly counting the stickers they have to see how many they have, the spaces left (to see how many they need). This has great self esteem value too as the charts are highly visible and easy for them to see their own progress.

I put the same animals on each desk in a table group and have different animals for each desk group. I also run a class table points competition (unusual in Kindergarten, I know), based on these cards.

Each time a desk group works really well together, they get a table point, which is recorded on a chart in the classroom. We do the points as tally marks (another good Maths concept) and every time they get five points (with the tally crossed across the four vertical marks) each person on the desk gets a sticker for their own personal chart.

This is their favourite thing to do! We also count by fives to work out how many points in total each group has.

I came from Year Five a few years ago and wasn't sure how well table points would work in Kindergarten, but though I'd give it a go anyway - it works very well!! :)

Recognition of appropriate behaviour
by: Marie

Thank you so much Dianna and Donna for providing this little treasure. I already use sticker charts with great success in my Pre Primary however I have a child who is presenting with very challenging behaviour.

I am going to try this as his individual positive behaviour record. I am hoping that seeing the blank ones will motivate him to try harder to finish the page. When it has been filled he will then be able to go up to the main office for a spin on the wheel where he will win a prize.

I do the same... but with a small difference
by: Anonymous

This is a great idea and it works really well. I do something similar, but have a half A-4 sheet with just plain smiley faces on them. Instead of using stickers, I found using a red smiley face stamp works over the top as I found the kids were stealing stickers from other students when I wasn't looking...so we switched to using the stamp.

Instead of having the charts on desks where I couldn't see them, we have them displayed on a wall. Each student has their name on the board, and ticks get put next to their name.

Each tick represents a stamp. We do it at the end of the day so the ticks can be removed for inappropriate behaviour before the smiley's go up. It means they have to work well all day to get their stamps.

Positive Stickers Work GREAT!!

Thanks for this idea!! These little sticker charts are wonderful and it has already made a difference with my little Kindergarteners' behavior. They are anxious to fill their chart to get a little prize from our prize jar. Thanks again!!

great idea!!
by: Kim

I plan to use these deskplates for one of my first grade boys who just can't seem to stay on task to finish ANYTHING!! I'm hoping the reward at the end plus the visual of how many more stickers he needs will be enough to keep him focused. Thanks for the great graphics!
