Playing with Letters and Sounds in Words

by Donna from K-3 Teacher Resources
(Australia)

Playing with Letters...

As a Year 1 Teacher, I have always encouraged the children to play with the letters and words. As often as we could we would be colouring in letter blends, or underlining certain letters.

We would always be looking for patterns within words for example - count how many words with 'oo' were in a poem etc..... The children loved doing this.

We would learn one class poem/rhyme every fortnight, this was always a great opportunity to look for letter / word patterns, as a whole class and then with individual copies of the poem.

The individual copies would come out looking so bright and colourful after we had finished circling, colouring and underlining the different patterns we could find....... Heaps of learning fun!
