Parent Input Guide

by Jessie
(Butler, TN, USA)

At the beginning of each school year each parent is asked to contribute ideas with a Parent Input Guide.

In this guide the parents are given most of the topics we will be covering throughout the year (ex. weather, community helpers, etc). We ask them to provide ideas in theme areas of activities that their child would like to participate in.

We have received some wonderful activity ideas and I try to incorporate at least one idea per week in my lesson plans. If it is a really neat art activity, for example, I will ask that parent to come into our classroom and do their activity with the children.

Great Idea
by: Anonymous

I think this is a great way to truly engage students in lessons and involve parents at the same time.

I am a lead teacher in my district. My job is to mentor and train new teachers. I had my own classroom for several years, and I always saw the value of parent volunteers.

I have two children, and the youngest is now in kindergarten. I was very apprehensive about him starting school. Even as a lead teacher for the county, I don't really feel comfortable visiting and/or assisting in his class. I have offered numerous times, but I don't want to overstep my bounds.

I am going to share this idea with my beginning teachers. I think parents and students would like this a great deal.

Thanks for sharing.
