Open Classroom Ideas

by Kate
(NSW)

Hi,
I am a new Year 1 teacher and have an open classroom in a few weeks time. Parents, siblings and family friends are all welcome, and the time allocated is 1.5 hours.
I was hoping some of you could give me some ideas/activities that will work well. I will do a whole class performance at the beginning and then want to have some stations/activities set up for the remainder of the time.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks :)

I am currently implementing L3 in my Kinder room and have had to develop an enormous amount of "independent" activities that the childen can do while I'm working with a small group. This site has provided me with so many printables. My advice would be to print some off, laminate them and teach your students how to use them prior to open day. I'm not sure what grade you teach so I won't recommend specifics. My tip is not to plan activities that require your attention as you will probably be swamped by parents wanting to chat with you. Keep it simple and fun. Good luck :)

If you have siblings coming then catering for them effectively is going to ensure you don't end up with your classroom being trashed!

I would have a really good play dough station set up on several desks pushed together. Make sure you have shapes, rolling pins, popsticks, fairy stones-whatever tools you can get your hands on.

This way you will be able to talk to your families and help stop the wondering (unsupervised) smaller children :)

In an attempt to avoid having kids crying because no one came to see them at open days I did something different and it really worked well. I put instructions at each table group for numeracy games (the kids had played them all before in class) using dominoes, dice or cards and the groups played them together. Some groups had lots of parents some one or two but the kids at each group still felt special because there was an adult there. I also had a handout parents could take home. Lots of positive feedback especially from the grandparents who have the time to play at home. It's important the kids know the games so they can be the teachers :)

  • One of the best ways to find children\'s strengths is to ask the other children. If you play the \"hot seat game\", where you ask the children to describe another, with no name given, just good things about them, you often learn all sorts of things that you didn\'t know were happening. Also I often get the child with a particular \"strength\" to go off and assist a buddy who needs help along those lines- makes for a very interesting conversation. After a while, everyone knows that ***** is good at blending, so they go and ask for help. Makes lots of smiles all over. what a clever woman you are to ask for strengths, when you yourself are feeling a little low. You need your own magic stick. It\'s one of those wands with glitter inside, when you shake it, you see the glitter feel happy and smile. Holding this stick many of my children have found the answer using the magic from the stick. Well done. Barbara.
