One and Won

Submitted by Admin (07-11-2012)

Hello,
I am a teachers aide looking for ideas to use to help my student learn the difference between One and Won. My student is having trouble because he/she relies heavily on the phonetic sounds to work out the words he/she is using. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

I wonder if I will win. win/won

Being that won is the past tense of win, have the kids make an association and this connection might help the children remember the differences.

I don't often wonder about one single thing.

The brain remembers more when associations and connections are made to things they already know.
I hope this helps.

I know that it helps me to remember things when I make connections and associate things that are alike.

Good luck.

Maybe help child with a visual, something they can think about or look at when working out which spelling & meaning is appropriate, to link the meaning of the word with what it looks like... talk about the fact that the W in "won" could look like a person with both hands in the air ...because they won the race, or are winning.

Child draws a picture of one hand on each of the top outside edges of the 'w' (top beginning and top end of the W) and a head on the centre peak of the W. To show the winner with their hands up.

Maybe explain that "one" is a number, "O" is like a single/one counter when counting in maths. Stick a disc counter on a piece of paper, or get the child to trace around a counter and then write the "ne" after it to help them remember that "one" is the word used when counting.

Hope this makes sense, just an idea? I have not tried it with class/children. I was just thinking about what I would try...good luck. Hope it helps

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
