Morning Storyboard

by Donna from K-3 Teacher Resources
(Australia)

Morning Storyboard....

A great way to start each morning is with a morning storyboard.

You can use a flip up chart sized book or I used to use the blackboard. You basically write a class message which is read first thing each morning.

It might go something like this ......

Hello my little year 1 cherubs. Today is Monday the 12th of December. Today we are going to learn some rhyming words.

Each day might be a different reading activity - sometimes I would add a riddle, or a joke, sometimes I would leave words out for the children to fill in.

Again, we would circle words, letters, play games with the sentences etc.

You could also eventually get the children to write a morning storyboard - each child taking it in turns.......We had a lot of fun with this...

News Book
by: Malachi

I use a morning News Book in which I write up some event, something we have done, or a student's news, asking the children to spell the words as I write.

I use the top page (back of previous page) to make word patterns, syllables etc. One book has about 7 entries, and we read back through the book each day.(I have "Boss for the Day or BFT who takes charge of this process)

At the end of the year we re-read our books and children take one each home. They often become treasures.

Great idea!

I have a class journal which is very similar to your concept here.

More often, I have the students tell me the entire message and I scribe while modelling good reading and writing skills for them.

This is one of the best things I've ever introduced.

It really sets us up for the whole day and brings so much of our literacy learning in so wonderfully.
