Morning Storyboard....
A great way to start each morning is with a morning storyboard.
You can use a flip up chart sized book, good old butchers paper - or nowadays IWB. Basically write a class message which is read first thing each morning.
It might be something like this ......
"Good Morning Year 1 Super Stars. Today is Monday the 12th of December. Today we are going to learn about rhyming words."
Each day could be a different reading activity - sometimes I would add a riddle, or a joke, sometimes I would leave words out for the children to fill in, or miss-spell words for children to find.
Also great to jumble the words up and children need to work together to put the sentence back in order. A lot of fun - with great use of language and sentence structure practise.
Again, we would play with the words - circle words, letters, sounds, play games with the sentences etc.
You could also get the children to write, or dictate the morning storyboard - each child taking it in turns.......We had a lot of fun with this...
DON'T FORGET TO THEN MAKE YOUR MORNING STORYBOARD MESSAGES INTO CLASS BOOKS EACH WEEK, MONTH OR TERM - THEN POP THE BOOK INTO BOOK CORNER FOR SILENT / FREE READING....KIDS LOVE IT...
