Make Your Own Set of Cards
This lesson would suit late Kindergarten (4-5 years), Pre-primary (5-6 years) and early year 1 (6-7 years) obviously the teacher will know her/his class and be able to pitch it at the right year / ability level.
The primary focus is counting from 1 -10 and recognising that a number can be either written numerically ( 1, 2, 3, - 9, 10 etc.) or represented by a divisible quantity of objects shapes etc.
Because playing cards are common place objects in most homes, children are familiar with them and quickly associate the numbers on them with other items coins etc.
By sticking the spots on the cards themselves it allows the students to conceptualise that the spots represent a number rather than just being a pretty picture.
Once the cards are made, the four groups put them into one pack and can be used in class for sometime to come.
Quality card and time taken in preparation will see the cards being used well after the initial lesson both as a teaching tool and, in the students recreation time.
I would have prefered to load the programme as a HTML file but have had to use a JPG one instead.
