LETTER SOUND PAINTING

by Hazel
(Gosnells, W.A)

Each week I teach a single sound to my class of PrePrimaries and Year Ones. However, I found that even though they could match the sounds to the pictures, they needed help to form the letters correctly.

So,in order to encourage the children to write the letters of the alphabet correctly, we paint a large letter and change it into something that begins with that sound.

For example: Letter O, Paint a large O on the middle of the paper using one colour, and then create an octopus using additional colours for the tentacles.

It is amazing how creative the children do become. A few have turned the letter D into dinosaurs, dolls, daisy and dad.

order for teaching sounds
by: Karin

Hi Zoe, in NSW we use the carnine order for teaching sounds.
I have found it to be very effective. If you're teaching 5 year olds or older then one letter a week probably isn't enough as they need to know the letters ready to start writing.
The order we use is:
amtsifdroglhucbnkvewjpyxqz.

Good luck.

Phonics
by: Fawnaroo

I teach formation in an order that corresponds with the strokes we develop (Order is at school or I would provide it here. I know it's similar to the order that "Writing w/out Tears" uses.) As for the phonics piece, both my teaching partner and I agree that we prefer not to teach them in any particular order, but rather integrate the sounds into soooo many daily activities and lessons that it's natural. The reference below about teaching phonics in a popular order set (can't recall the program that recommended that structure-but I have used it) is also great, because as she said, children can already read/write words with just a few letters.

BTW-I teach Kindergarten. A nice supplemental resource that I picked up last summer that I have found helpful can be found through Scholastic. A teacher in Colorado shared her approach in her book "Teaching Writing in Kindergarten." I have enjoyed using it and found it very practical w/ little prep needed.

Hi Zoe
It all depends on the purpose of the lesson. If teaching phonics, I like to begin with the really popular letters like c, t, s, f and then the vowel a. They can already, with those few letters, begin to put them together to see how words are made up. Keep adding consonants and throw in a vowel at regular intervals.

If you are doing it for letter formation, I have always done l, t, h. k. i. j. Then moved on to c, o, a, d, g, q. After that try r, n, m, p, b. The letters v, w and u and y belong together, then e, f, s, x, z Happy teaching.

Is there a particular order?
by: Anonymous

I'm a bit new to teaching younger children. Just a question - is there a preferred order in which to introduce the letters/sounds of the alphabet? Or do you just start at 'a'?
thanks in advance.
Zoe
