Ladder of Success

by Sue
(Melbourne, Australia)

I painted a large ladder to put on the front of the cupboard door (can go anywhere). I made a name card for each child and they all started on the middle rung of the ladder. When they followed directions really quickly or other positive reasons, they would move up the ladder. If however their behaviour was poor, they hurt someone etc they moved down the ladder. When they reached the top, they received a reward.

I started them on the middle rung everyday in the beginning and only after a period of time I made it weekly. Once they reached the top, they then went back to the middle. This worked extremely well with the class I had.

Number of Rungs?
by: Sue

Hi Freyia
You can have as many rungs as you would like depending on the age group but I had 9 which was plenty without being too many. Success was not out of reach and it meant that they didn't hit the bottom too quickly.
Apologise for the delay in getting back to you. Hope it works for you the way it did for me.

Great Idea
by: Colleen

That's a great idea ...... so simple, visual and yet easy to do - - -the children have instant recognition for their positive behaviour. I think I will be making a ladder over the next holidays .... but which colour to paint it .....
