*SIGN IN BOOK ...
Have a sign-in book - for children to practise 'signing' in when they arrive for the day...or you could even set up a 'comments' book children can write in as an ongoing class dialogue - (probably need to set limits on what is added to 'comments' - good for comment 'etiquette').
*RULER....
A simple old ruler makes a great number line.
*LESSON GOALS EXPOSED !!...
Before certain lessons - tell the children what the 'goals', 'objectives' of the lesson are. Finish this line for each 'important' lesson - After this lesson we will be able to.............................................. Check back in after the lesson - double check on those children who need follow-up. It's great for the children to know where they are heading from the start ...... little steps go a long way.... step by step!
*CREATE MISTAKES (or at least make it look like you did it on purpose!)....
*Create 'mistakes' in your modelled writing deliberately - children have a ball telling you where you have a spelling mistake or incorrect grammar! (great for reinforcing observation / literacy strategy skills)
SEATING ARRANGEMENTS....
*Really think about who sits next to who - it can make a big difference!
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES....
*Find the strengths and encourage them - don't focus on the weaknesses only - even the most difficult children have strengths.
SMILE....
*Smile and give yourself a break - you are doing such a wonderful job in increasingly tricky circumstances - thank you!
