K-2 Team Leader - a new adventure

by Sharyn
(St Helens Tas)

It's time for my next adventure!
After the Easter break, I will be taking up a new position as the K-2 Team Leader at our school. This means no longer being in class full time and giving up my Prep-1 class for the rest of the year.

As part of my role I will be working with all of our classes in Literacy support, especially with those students who have not achieved the expected benchmarks for reading. We expect that prep students achieve RRL5, Grade 1 - RRL15, and Grade 2 - RRL 26+ by the end of the year.

This year we are having a very strong Literacy push, with professional development of all K-6 staff in First Steps Reading and Writing. We have almost completed the Reading PD and are becoming more familiar with the resources and assessing and grouping students for explicit teaching.

I'm looking forward to using many more of the great resources from this site. The quality of these resources is extremely high and the students that have used these resources so far enjoy them due to their colour and presentation. My favourites are the alphabet resources (because there are so many different ways to use them), the concept books, while the rhymes are perfect for beginning readers as they have to look closely in order to match the text.

Language experience ideas for a fellow prep teacher...
by: Sarah

Hi Sharyn, I was just reading your teacher zone page and noticed you have become the K-2 Team Leader and work in the area of literacy as well. I also noticed you have taught prep. I am a fellow prep teacher that lacks language experience ideas and was hoping you maybe able to give me a few suggestions. I take my ideas for language experience from things that are happening in my classroom and school. But when there is not much happening I cant think of topics for the kids to write about. Could you please give me some ideas. Thanks in advance, Sarah
