Jigsaw Puzzles for Maths

by Donna
(K-3 Teacher Resources)

We all know that jigsaw puzzles are wonderful for introducing early spacial learning, fine motor skills and more.

For some reason, about grade 1 or 2 - interaction with jigsaws seems to fade out.

Children love the challenge of jigsaws and they really are fabulous for ongoing spacial problem solving and awareness, as well as fantastic for working with others, communication and problem solving skills.

Have a challenging jigsaw on the go in your classroom. Make sure it is one that will take about a week to finish - so about 200-500 or more pieces depending on the age of your group.

You will need a 'special' jigsaw table area and loads of practice and reinforcement of jigsaw procedures such as when the jigsaw can be worked on and how many at a time etc - the set up and procedures is a key element in how this works. A jigsaw mat is also a worthwhile purchase to stop the pieces from moving easily.

This works soooo well as a once a week maths rotation / group work activity as well as a 'free time', early finisher, or 'reward' activity.

It is so rewarding for the children to complete a puzzle knowing that they have all worked together to make it happen - so much extra social learning from this - give it a go...you could take a picture of each puzzle completed and keep a class gallery over the year.

I pick up a lot of great puzzles from garage sales and second hand shops.

Cheers everyone

Puzzles as a group building activity
by: Susan

I love challenging the students with jigsaw puzzles. I use 60 piece, later 100 piece puzzles and do group relays with my first graders. I divide my class into groups of 3 - 5 and each group has a different puzzle. The groups race to complete the puzzles. Students must learn to work together as a team. They also learn the visual and spatial techniques to find the pieces. Have fun!!!
