Ipods in my Preschool Classroom

by Amanda S

I use ipods daily in my classroom. The children use them independently in three centers. I have a classic ipod in my music center. All the songs we sing are loaded so they can sing along or play instruments with the music.

I have two nanos in my listening center. The kids use the cover flow option to match the picture with the story they want to hear.

I use ipod touches in my small group instruction center. We use them for learning to count, write letters, and even to learn to spell our names. I am currently looking for an app that covers rhyming skills that is mostly pictures if anyone has a suggestion.

My kids LOVE them. We always have a waiting list on the days the ipods are used in small group. Some great apps for young children are:

Letter Tracer
Monkey Preschool Lunchbox
Cute Math
Any First Words App
Write My Name
Shape Builder

Purchasing ipods
by: Jenna

I was just wondering if your schools are purchasing ipods out of their budgets or if teachers are purchasing their own ipods to use at school? I am currently teaching in a K-12 private school and I am finding that the lower parts of the school are not getting priority for technology in the classrooms. We have 2 computers in each classroom and get 1/2 a week in the computer lab...

earphones
by: Corinne

Hi,
I was wondering, do you use the little earbud type earphones? Do kids share these, or does each child have their own?
In my teaching context where many kids have otitis media I dont think it would be very hygienic to share earphones. How do you guys get around this? Maybe each child wipes them when they are finished/begin?

ipods in classrooms
by: Jill Allie

I also have, for years, used the old fashioned cassette player where the children use bulky headphones (I might add, very durable). I have recorded many stories and was wondering how I could transfer these stories onto the new technology.

I have discovered that there is a converter device available commercially. It comes with a computer program which when installed allows you to make a copy to be transferred to a MP3 player.

No need to copy onto disc! It costs around $90 but it is worth it when you want to continue to use your stories with a read along book. It is available from a well known video-audio retailer.

I have already purchased a multi-share headphone jack called RockStar so I can still use this activity as a group centre.

iTouch iPods
by: Lesleigh

Great comments Amanda on pre school use!

Yes you can put stories, books and movies on your iTouch or iPod. Some of the sites are free.

Have a look at the posts that I have added to my school blog http://stmarysbowraville.edublogs.org/ and also some general ideas regarding iPods in the classroom and iTunesU in my general blog http://ictassist.edublogs.org/

Have fun with your Learning in hand ventures!

Wow, Ipods in the classroom!
by: Anonymous

Hello,

I am a lower primary teacher and am very impressed to hear that ipods are being used so cleverly in the classroom. I would certainly like to know more about the set up. How many do you really need for it to be effective? Love the idea and think it is essential that teachers are targeting a multi-modal approach to teaching.

I was wondering about how I can do 'roles of the reader' properly with Kindy. I was given these mp3's to play around with and realised that it is really easy to record the children's answers and play it back during sharing. It has proven to be a fantastic tool and the children are able to use them independently after very little instruction.

Congratulations on taking risks!

I agree
by: Jasmine

I-pods, or their later cheaper clones, do have a place in the classroom. Who can not help notice that most of the population uses them (or seems to be most - even I have one)?

Not to use this and other technology just keeps our kids in the stone age ( Rolling Stone age I suppose).

Being a bit older these days I remember when the ball point pen was banned from our school because it would ruin our writing. Well I lived to prove them wrong - who ever they were.

Ipods in the classroom
by: Bernadette

I have been interested in using IPODS instead of the old listening post system. We have the larger headphones that are mostly broken. My questions then are:

Can you get stories on the IPODs that have books to go with them?

Is there a site where stories, songs etc. can be downloaded free?

Cost is the problem for us.

Any ideas?
