A 5th grade teacher in my building is using this process. She asked for volunteers from the staff to help out. Each of 24 teachers has a 5th grade "pen-pal". The students write whenever and whatever they wish , in letter form in a notebook.

Every other Friday, the notebooks are placed in the volunteer teachers' mailboxes. We write a response and return it on Monday. The teachers write one response every two weeks but the students write between one and 10 entries.
