Interactive Whiteboards in the classroom
by Rebecca
(Darwin, Northern Territory Australia)
Hi, my name is Rebecca and I teach transition/year one in Darwin, NT. Our school is very technology focused and all classes have use of full class sets of laptops. All rooms also have an IWB, which I don't think I can live without!
- I use the whiteboard for displaying my morning activity (PATTER) groups, guided reading and spelling groups.
- I also use it for an introduction handwriting lesson, where I get the kids to practice the letter we are learning on the whiteboard. The fun thing about this is that the kids love changing the writing to rainbow, or stars etc. Really gets them engaged.
- I use the whiteboard for phonics, starfall.com. I also have this website as a favourite on the laptops, and the kids love it. We also brainstorm words starting with the letter we are learning.
- For writing we are exploring narrative, and I like to find funny, interesting pictures for the kids as a stimulus. I display them on the whiteboard so it is nice and big, and the kids can reference it as they write. The kids get excited whenever they see a new picture.
- As a treat the kids like to play mathsblaster. It is a maths game for the interactive, and the kids really enjoy it.
There are so many uses for the whiteboard, and these are just some that I use every day. There are stacks of websites on the net for interactive whiteboard games for kids. My favourites are:
starfall.com (phonics/learning to read etc)
copacabana-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/Get_Smart_Pages/Get_Smart.htm (interactive maths games)
primarygames.com

I love these websites as once I have found a good site and introduce it to the kids, I add it to the favourites on the laptops that they use and navigate them independently.
Hope these sites come in handy, and remember there are many more out there!
