Homeschooling Help

Submitted by michelle (07-11-2012)

Hi there,
I am a former secondary School teacher and am about to embark on the homeschooling journey with my daughter. I am preparing for her Kindergarten curriculum and would like to know if anyone could recommend a good guided reading program with levelled books and instructions etc. I have heard of the Fitzroy readers. Are they for guided reading?
Also, when do kindy kids usually start guided reading? Term 2?

Thanking you in advance

Michelle.

I am a homeschooler and a practising Kindergarten teacher and I highly recommend the Fitzroy reading program. You can purchase the levelled readers as well as a workbook with literacy activities related to each book. We used these to teach our children how to read.

Best regards.

Hi,
There are now some videos on letterboxlearntoread facebook page to help beginning readers.
Take a look. It might help you.
Good luck.

Hi,
I would commence with Concept of Print... you can google this information. Phonological Awareness is vital to learning to read and spell. High frequency words and phonics etc is also vital.
There are lots of levelled reading books... Sunshine, PM etc. But if you want to teach your child to read with library books you could use the Fry's complexity scale to help you level books. It would depend on how much time you have.
Facebook letterbox learntoread is placing comments on for the whole day tomorrow to help with Prep children. It should be fantastic.
Good luck

Hi,

I am also a homeschooler with a just 3 year old. He asked at age 2.5 to learn to read and I had NO IDEA how to help a child that young to learn. I did a lot of research and found that the Montessori approach seems best for us. He can already spell his name with letter magnets and recognises many letters. I learned to read with Dr Seuss books and I am continuing this tradition as I find that 'readers' have no real story lines and don't engage children or make them want to read the story again. The great thing about homeschooling is that you don't need to follow the exact path and timing that the Government schools hand down, you can follow your child's interests and cues. It's all about experimentation and learning to love to learn with your child!

PM readers through Nelson Publishing. Start her on fiction & slowly introduce non-fiction after level 8ish. 3 - 4 titles per week is ideal. We start guided reading week 3-5 Term 1. Would be happy to email with you for any queries you may have..... (17 years teaching, 4th year in Kindy).

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
