Harmony Day Ideas Please
Submitted by Julia (06-11-2012)
It seems only yesterday we were celebrating Harmony Day 2011 and here we are about to celebrate it again next week March 21st.
I am looking for a simple idea to do with junior primary students to present at a whole-school assembly. We usually make colourful, decorated hats and students come to school in traditional costumes or orange clothes.
Although the theme this year is about Sport and its inclusivity, I would be more interested in finding an idea (craft/art) to do with cultural diversity and inclusivity eg you+me=us. I'm looking for something quick, easy, effective, meaningful and fun (not much to ask I know!). Thank you!

Year 1 Telling the time
Submitted by Danielle
With a year one class we played What's the Time Mr Wolf - but instead of the wolf (myself) calling out 'It's one o'clock!" I used a clock with moveable hands.

Storing Teacher Themed Resources
Submitted by Jennifer
I am having a major sort out! Has anyone got any ideas for how to organise teaching theme resources?

I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!

What others are saying...
Our school are doing anonymous cards with nice messages. The kids then pick a card at random to take home. We're also doing mosaics. In class we're doing Aboriginal dot paintings. Hope it helps :)
Thank you to all those who responded to my query regarding ideas for our Harmony Day assembly. There were some good ideas which I will share with my colleagues during the week. Happy Harmony Day!
Last year in my k/pp/yr1 class I found a huge piece of bark which became the trunk of our Harmony Tree (which I glued to a huge piece of white thick card) then I had all students, parents, siblings (basically anyone who came into the class that day) add a handprint to form the leaves of the tree. People could choose to use orange, brown or green coloured paint for their handprint. The tree stayed on our wall for the rest of the year and was much loved by all :)
You could make paper chains where all the children put their name on one and link them altogether. Kindness awards or something similar where they have to choose another child and say what they like about them eg. "I like the way Sarah always shares". (obviously a prep idea)- but you could adapt it with the older children.
Wow, I really like that idea.
On a different note, re Harmony Day. see this testimonial. Worksheets can be available afterwards for early ages..
'I organised the Wandering in the Bush Show to visit our school as part of our Harmony Day celebrations. The students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Greg and Linda were most entertaining and have a very special way with children. I would definitely recommend the performance to all educators wishing to foster appreciation and positive attitudes towards Aboriginal culture within their community !’
