Guided Reading for Kinders

by Nerida
(Coffs Harbour)

My Kinder class love Guided Reading sessions. I have 4 groups on a rotation, with no aid. I work with one group on a guided reading book and word study. This group then moves onto an activity to follow up on the GR session, including reading games (I explain what they have to do when they are with me).

After this the group then has a more relaxing activity that encourages finger dexterity, such as playdough, alphabet dot to dot, mazes, jigsaws or block patterns. The group then goes to the computer to do interactive reading activities from 'starfall.com' which caters for all abilities from level 1 upwards. I start with the bottom group doing GR first while they are fresh.

Grouping by ability or mixed ability groups
by: Anonymous

I completely understand the benefits of mixed ability groups during the first two terms of Kindergarten, even during some of Term 3. All I know is that when I was teaching Kindergarten last year, by Term 4 I had some students nearing or above Reading Level 20 and some still working at around Level 4. Their learning needs were vastly different, when it came to Guided Reading, so I catered to that.

'Bottom group'
by: Anonymous

Classifying children as 'the bottom group' shows that the teacher has recognised that at that point in time they are struggling. This enables the teacher to provide additional support for these children so that they can progress to the level of their peers.

Whilst it is true that children do learn alot from each other ability based groups are essential for guided reading. It would be impossible to conduct guided reading with a group on varying levels. Someone would obviously be disadvantaged. The top child would be held back and the bottom child would be left behind.

What About the Rest?
by: Sue

Great ideas but what are the rest doing while you are conducting Guided Reading and what do you class as a word study?

What about the rest?

I would love to know what Nerida has the rest of her groups working on while she is conducting Guided Reading

Thankyou

Nice ideas here. Thanks But sorry to see you have a "bottom"group already! A "less mature " group I guess. But still I think it's a pity to categorise and group children in this way at this stage. The children can learn so much from each other in mixed groups don't you think?
