Friends of Ten

We've been looking a lot at Friends of 10. We use a large sized pack of cards for whole group activities, where the ace is 1. Remove the picture cards and use the cards to play whole group games where children have to find their 'friend' of 10. They sit down once they have found a friend. They also use the smaller packs to play memory and 'go fish' with a partner.
We also play partner games for friends of 10. Hand out to each pair of children, 10 cubes and a small plastic bowl. Place the cubes on top of the upturned bowl. One of the players then covers his eyes while his partner hides some of the cubes under the bowl. They use their knowledge of 10 to work out how many are under the bowl.
Another good activity is to construct a set of 'windows'. I did this by cutting out a frame and then laminating it so that I had a clear window in the middle. Children then work in pairs, one window and ten counters per pair. Place the counters in a row and then ask children to place their window somewhere on the line. How many counters are 'inside' the window? How many are 'outside'? Record answers.
