Flashcard Practice
by Louise Martin
(Hunter Valley NSW)
Set up pockets with students names on them. Before children leave for recess, lunch and home, have the children choose a flashcard (addition, subtraction, division or multiplication) and answer the question.
If answered correctly the child puts it in their pocket. At the end of the week, remove and tally cards, for every 10 correct a small sticker is added to the front on the pocket and then when they have 5 stickers they are rewarded from the prize box or anything which you deem appropriate.
This works well with the children asking you to do the flashcards before leaving, so they can earn their stickers. They will also keep a tally themselves letting you know they have 10 cards in their pockets! Can also be done with sight word cards.
