by Sonya

I was just wondering if anyone could please give me some ideas on how they handle the first couple of days at school in a Kindergarten class. This is the first time I have taught kindy and am looking for ideas.

Some ideas for the first few days
by: Jennifer

I have not taught for a few years but still remember some of the things I used to do with my new Prep /kinder class.

Focus on their names initial letters of their name and outline with glitter, or small squares of paper all around the edge of a large letter, with the title My name begins with ....

Lots of stories and nursery rhymes, take home a little book they make at school, you type the words and they draw the picture.

Make a paper plate face of themselves and hang around the room with their name hanging from the bottom. Draw a picture of their first day of school with the page titled, On my first day of school I.... and you fill in the words.

Decorate a placemat with their name typed on it in big letters in the centre and then laminate and use to work out positions in the classroom.

Take home a teddy/special furry friend etc for the night and provide a book to write about its adventures with the child and share the next day.

Great for parent involvement and the children really love getting their turn.(make sure you get everyone and don't leave any out)

Just a few ideas hope they are helpful. All the best J

First week of School
by: Liz

During the 1st days of school in Pre-primary (1/2 days for the 1st 2 weeks) some time is taken up establishing classroom rules (in consultation with the children), outside playground rules, lining up, sitting on the mat etc and familiarizing the children with the PP room.

Also I really like to ensure they make something to take home on the 1st day, whether it be a drawing, painting or my favourite a friendship bracelet ( previously submitted on this site.)

I also read a story, do a music session and the children have an outside play session. A full 3 hours. Establishing routines is essential, but I also ensure the mornings are fun too.

Remember you will also have to deal with first time parents too. Good luck and have fun.

first week back for Kinder
by: Tania

I am nervous about it too - first time on Kindy at the beginning of a year. I have been assured that sooo much time is taken up learning how to line up, walk quietly, toilet breaks, and general get to know your school stuff that all they will have time for is a few short stories (Premiers Reading Challenge??!!) and some structured play...
