Fathers Day

Submitted by Rhiannon (09-11-2012)

Hi I'm a graduate teacher in country WA on a 2/3 class and was just wondering if anyone had some good fathers day ideas before I googled it.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

For Father's Day, I buy some wooden coasters from a craft shop (about 50c each). The students paint them then carefully cut out a picture of something their dad would like eg golf club, car, yacht.

Sometimes they add the word Dad or dad's initials. They glue this onto the paint and when it is dry they put a glaze/polish on top. Then they have a lovely personalised coaster for Dad!

I made a batch of German honey biscuit dough from which I cut each child in the class a large disc of dough using a large scone cutter. The children then had fun "making their fathers." We used a garlic press for hair, beards, etc. When the biscuits were baked they looked fantastic wrapped in little clear cellophane bags. The recipe is as follows: Ingredients:

? 1 cup of honey
? 1 cup of sugar
? 1 tablespoon of butter
? ½ cup cold water
? 1 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
? 1 egg well beaten
? 1 teaspoon ground cloves
? 1 teaspoon cinnamon
? 2cups self raising flour
? 2 cups plain flour

Method:

? Heat oven to 180ºC
? Heat honey sugar and butter in a large saucepan until sugar is dissolved.
? Add water and bicarbonate of soda
? Stand until luke-warm
? Add egg, spices and flours
? Knead and roll out on floured board
? Cut into shapes with biscuit cutters.
? Arrange on buttered trays
? Bake for 7 minutes

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
