Everyone is IT

Submitted by Kari (11-10-2012)

If my class is really off task or in need of a physical break, we all go outside to play this game.

Everyone is 'IT' and tries to tag someone in the class. If you are tagged you must put your hand up. Someone who is free can save you by giving you a high five. We add little fun elements to being saved like -- to free someone you give them a high five and then they shake their knees and say "Thank you! Thank you very much!" in their best Elvis impression.

It is a quick and easy game that once the kids know how to play it, we use it as a warm-up to other games or even as a 5 minute activity break. Either way the kids love it and you will too!

It seems like there would be a lot of bumping into each other.

This sounds like a fun way to get the kids up and moving. I am trialling a new 'short break' strategy myself. The idea came from my daughter's grade 3 class but I am using it with 1/2s. It's called "30 second dance party". Basically it involves getting fidgety kids to stand up and find a little space in the room and putting on some dance music for 30 seconds -min. Encourage creative dancing by mentioning names of children putting in some effort. The kids think it's awesome and it's SOOO easy.

What a neat idea - so easy but so much fun as everyone is involved! I'm definitely going to try this!

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
