Cuddles The Koala Class Management Plan

Submitted by Admin (11-10-2012)

Hi there,

I have a stuffed toy koala that sits up on the tall cupboard under the gum leaves in the classroom. He sits there all day looking for the best workers.

The class sit in table groups labeled red, yellow, blue and green. Each time I (or Cuddles) catch a group working well I give them a point. The group that scores the most points in the week win a lolly and a marble is placed in their jar.

Cuddles the Koala comes down from the tree and the winning students each give him a cuddle, place a coloured cap and medal of the same colour as their table on him.

He then sits up in the tree until the week is over, then the next winners have a turn. When the jar for that table group has three marbles the group get a special prize agreed upon by the group. They choose either a lucky dip, icypole, chocolate frog, lollypop.

This works so well. My students stay focused and quiet during desk activities and whilst on the floor I pick co operative students to earn extra points for their table.

Try it. It works!

What a great ideas but what about food as a reward? We are not allowed to reward with food for health and dental health reasons.

  • One of the best ways to find children\'s strengths is to ask the other children. If you play the \"hot seat game\", where you ask the children to describe another, with no name given, just good things about them, you often learn all sorts of things that you didn\'t know were happening. Also I often get the child with a particular \"strength\" to go off and assist a buddy who needs help along those lines- makes for a very interesting conversation. After a while, everyone knows that ***** is good at blending, so they go and ask for help. Makes lots of smiles all over. what a clever woman you are to ask for strengths, when you yourself are feeling a little low. You need your own magic stick. It\'s one of those wands with glitter inside, when you shake it, you see the glitter feel happy and smile. Holding this stick many of my children have found the answer using the magic from the stick. Well done. Barbara.
