Creative Writing

Submitted by Sarah (06-11-2012)

I'm wondering if anyone has some good ideas for Creative Writing lessons with Grade 2. I find it difficult to come up with engaging topics each week to write about. We are currently doing the 5 Senses so I'm trying to link that in as well if it fits.

We've started Writers Notebook this term and the kids love it.

They drew a heart and filled it with everything that was important to them. Now if we have creative writing they pick something that is 'close to their heart'.

Another thing they love is writing about a strange picture (google images is great!!)
- We discuss the nouns and adjectives that suit the picture then ask them to 'solve it'. See what's currently happening and what might happen next. It's great to see what they come up with.

All great ideas, I will definitely have a go at some of these. Thank you everyone!

In my Year Two class we do this.
The students have a sliding frame - where two of the four strips of card slide to alter the size of the frame. We look at a photo of a sad face for example, put the frame (resized to fit, over the eyes, and describe what we see. "Tears like raindrops filled her eyes." You will be amazed at what they see when the focus area is small. This works well for art also.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to help students from Grade 2 to to write good recounts like 'My weekend', 'My holiday'.
Thanks!

Make lots of circles, with a spinner, one each for character, plot setting and complication. Put all sorts of different things on each spinner. For older children you can also have spinners for parts of speech that must be included in the story.

The children spin each dial, then use the random selections to create a story. When you first try this, use lots of oral work and become as wild as you like. Sometimes small groups are good too as they bounce ideas off each other.

I would then get the children to read or perform the story to others. You need to set a time limit or the stories can go on for ever. These are wonderful assembly productions too because they are original. The difficulty is to get the children to come to an ending.

I am a homeschooler and I sit down with my own children and get them to come up with a few sentence beginners each ie each child in your class could come up with 1 each for the 5 senses. eg I was riding on the train into the city and as I glanced out the window I saw.... or I was walking along the beach and suddenly heard.... These sentence beginners then go into a box.
Then each day one child selects a piece of paper from the box and everyone writes a story/paragraph etc with that as the opening.

I take my students on a sensory walk about the school. They have a chart with the five senses and they jot down things they see, hear, feel etc on the walk. Great for different seasons too.

I am an integration aide and last year the teacher used her photos of animals at the zoo for creative writing inspiration for her grade two class. We printed and laminated the photos A4 size in color and the children were able to chose one they liked best, some shared and wrote what they thought they were doing etc..this could include the 5 senses well too.

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
