Counting Beads Maths Activity

by Julie
(Port Augusta SA)

I have children in my class at the special school that I work at who have trouble counting. Today I tried something new to practice counting with them.

I got some 'scoobi' laces out, and a heap of beads. We sat in a circle, and I told them to count out simple numbers (up to 5) and then thread that amount of beads onto their lace. It worked really well, and using colourful beads kept their interest up, along with actually seeing the pattern grow as they threaded beads on.

A great activity to use with littlies for development of fine motor skills and counting skills.

This is a great idea. I use it with my Kinders, you can see at a glance if they can one to one count or count by rote.
