Before the meeting decide upon some basic rules.
Only one person speaks at a time ( use of pompom ball) and can only speak once on that topic.
Each member of the group has one vote and the majority rules.
Everyone's opinion is important and valued. ( you may need to intervene here to make sure that not only loud confident children take the floor.)
Allow both speakers for and against the idea to speak - usually one for, then one against.

In the original class meeting hold a rehearsal part where the topic is set by you. Give particular students ideas on what he /she will talk about on the topic. Give the Chairperson a soft pompom ball that can be tossed to each speaker, then back to the chairperson.

Decide how many speakers that you will allow to speak to the topic; maybe everyone or a given number.
After the discussion the Chairperson calls for a vote, either hands or written.
The secretary records the motion, then whole class discussion is held on how to make it all happen.
I use this process in the SRC and it works very well across grades. There are times when I have to step in with a reality check on particular issues, but generally speaking once the children see democracy in action there is no stopping them. Good Luck

Class Meetings

A class meeting where students will take on roles such as chair person and secretary. Where they will be able to share ideas, make decisions and so on. I have successfully run them several years ago but was curious as to any new ideas out there.

How do you mean 'class meeting'? (as in parent meeting at the start of the year, class debate, etc)??
