Christmas Around the World
by Susan Fowler
(Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States of America)
Our first grade students study how children in other countries celebrate Christmas. We learn about the continent, the country, the weather, the traditions and foods that they have. We also discuss if that country's focus is on celebrating the true meaning of Christmas (the birth of Jesus) or if it is from a secular viewpoint.
We usually make a Christmas craft from their tradition (an ornament for the tree and such) and sometimes a snack from that country.
We also try to learn how to say Merry Christmas in their language. We also discuss what traditions America has that originated in another country. If possible, we have someone visit our classroom who is from that country OR who has visited that country.
At one point in Oklahoma City, we had Christmas trees on display, that were decorated for other countries. I would love to hear from some of you that live in other countries.
