Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

I found this wonderful Book written by Bill Martin Jr and another author called Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It's the story of letters climbing up the coconut tree, which then collapses under them and their Mums and Dads (capital letters) come to collect them.
There is also a rap video dvd that sings it in a very appealing way. We read and sang it countless times and children then made a coconut tree and wrote the alphabet going up.
We also constructed a big tree in our room, and each child cut out a large letter (the one their name started with) and drew lots of pictures inside that started with that letter, then we glued it on the tree.
We also made playdough mats with a coconut tree and children used playdough to make letters climb up the tree. We also had mats with a picture on them and the children had to make the letter that matched the picture out of playdough.
We made a big book - one page for each letter of the alphabet saying Here comes Aa up the coconut tree, (children drew some pictures on some of the pages and on others found the letter in different fonts in magazines to glue on)
We did it in a prep class term four and had fun investigating letters, sounds and the alphabet without the pressure of getting it right.

What others are saying...
Hurray I have been using Bill Martin Jr books since the 80s yes I'm old. Get your hands on teachers editions of Sounds I remember, Sounds of a Pow Wow and many more for lots of ideas to have students enjoy reading and listening to rhyme rhythm and stories again.
Make parodies of his books, chants and raps. Ideals for choral reading/ with fun chants - check out The Bear Song Kids love it and I bet you know it - scouts, guide camp fire fun. The books are oldies but goodies. Select may have them (they used

I have also used this book. You can also find two good music versions on You-tube. My class loved dancing to them while watching and listening to them on the interactive white board. I then drew a coconut tree on A3 paper and photocopied it for the class. Each student got to paint their own alphabet going up the tree. They loved this as they got to use lots of colours, just like in the book.
Thanks. I am going to use the name activity next year
We use this book as well and the students love to repeat the phrase--Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Our K-teacher has a southern accent and some of our Amish students come away saying this phrase with an charming southern accent.
An activity I use with this book involves having the children spell their name with construction paper letters going up a printed coconut tree.
This is the video we have but don't you just love it thanks
Here is a video of the book. My granddaughters have watched it over and over. It's on YouTube so it's free. Enjoy!
