Browsing Beginning Teacher Questions

Submitted by Paula (07-11-2012)

I graduated last year and am only planning on relief teaching this year until my son starts school. I want to do any professional development workshops/courses in the mean time to keep current and to look good on my resume. Can anyone recommend any? Scholastic runs a few, are they worth the $175.

Thank you
Paula

If you have the money THRASS is excellent. By far the best PD I have ever received - but expensive.
You can try your local or national professional associations such as English and Mathematics. Check out the uni's. They often have PD happening for teachers. In NSW, Uni of Sydney holds Successful Learning in June.
Also when in schools, check out what is on offer on their notice boards.
Try a google search too.
Hope that helps

Hi again Paula,

Just found Pat Edgar's site. Is www.patedgar.com She is a great lady and Teacher. Her professional development courses focus mainly on literacy, and are very worthwhile.

Hope this helps you.

Some professional development courses can cost a lot of money. You might like to consider approaching the executive and/or principals of the schools you work in to seek permission for attending any of their 'staff meetings' for professional development. You might even be lucky enough to participate in sessions where the teachers themselves are updating their skills in a particular area of the curriculum.

Hi Paula

You are the first to contribute to this category, as I just opened this one up.

As for workshops, I am not sure about Scholastic, although I imagine that they would run a very good course.

Pat Edgar runs very good PD courses in Brisbane. I have not been in touch with her for a while now, but I will see what I can find out about where she is holding courses at the moment, and let you know.

Cheers for now
Donna

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
