Book Week ideas and activities
Submitted by Julia (Adelaide) (09-11-2012)
Week 6 in South Australia is Book Week (is this a nationwide annual book celebration?). This year's theme is 'Across the Story Bridge'.
Like many schools, our school is having a Book Week Assembly and all classes are presenting an item with the theme of bridges/stories etc.
Does anyone have any assembly ideas for Book Week that are quick, effective and fun? Thank you.

Year 1 Telling the time

With a year one class we played What's the Time Mr Wolf - but instead of the wolf (myself) calling out 'It's one o'clock!" I used a clock with moveable hands.

I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!

What others are saying...
Hi there
Have also just started a 2011 book week ideas page here....
http://www.k-3teacherresources.com/book-week-2011.html
As Book Week 2011 is fast approaching it would be great to hear of any ideas around the theme 'One World, Many Stories' and particularly library displays. Any help/ideas would be very much appreciated.
Would we like to share our ideas for book week 2011????
Would especially love to hear how people are going to decorate their library.....
look forward to your ideas
Last year we did book week with so many activities like Drop every thing and read, Dress like book character all the children from k-5 dress like book character and pared in whole school, puppet show on famous book.
My class is creating a string of bunting to use as decoration on Friday.
Each child has taken home 4 precut flags and have been asked to write their name and the title of each book they read each night. Our class goal is 100 books from Monday night to Friday morning. They have really taken to the idea and had some come back for more flags already.
It has really sparked their enthusiasm for reading at night. We were planning to hang it from our balcony to make it look like a bridge with a sign saying We Crossed the Story Bridge.
Hi
You may want to incorporate activities from National Literacy and Numeracy Week (29 August - 4 September). During this week at our school we undertake literacy and numeracy activities from the website, as well as the traditional book character parade. The link is http://celebrationofliteracy.net.au/activities
It gives us a broader scope in activities and the promotion of literacy, literature and language (to use the terms from the Draft National English Curriculum)
enjoy

Have Fun and Keep on Reading.....
How about acting out the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We celebrated book week a little early this year due to a clash with our school concert and this was done at our assembly. You could have yourself (or a confident child) narrate. It is great if you can con one of the staff to dress up as the ogre. Our PE teacher did this and the children have been talking about it ever since. He even went around at playtime play-scaring the preps!
The story ties in well with the story bridge theme.
Good luck and have fun!
