Best way to set up writing groups

Submitted by Admin (06-11-2012)

Hello there everyone....

I have a kindergarten class....with 3 ability groups.... (top middle and bottom), I have about half an hour for writing each day and offers for parent helpers....

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good routine that works ?

Thankyou,

google the Daily 5.
I am using this with my prep class (qld). It's awesome!

I think that the goal idea presented above is a great idea.
Even though the children are young, I would start look at the groupings and focus the goals on what needs to be achieved. Is it writing longer more interesting sentences, or is it just starting, generating an idea? Be specific in your focus and therefore in the modelling that you offer.
I had a teacher tell me today that she had her children write up their own behavioural charts....
They wrote up a chart for a day and wrote about their good and bad behaviour....it was amazing what the children wrote.
The best of luck.

Have a rotating group, one station can be working on letter formation (rainbow writing is fun! Where students write a letter so they use all the colors) , you can also do name writing or look cover write check of sight words, then have teacher working with a group to do guided sentence writing. I have them read a sentence first then unjumble cut up words before copying it on a whiteboard then if they have everything done they publish it in their books.

Hi there
Do you have a list of goals?? I teach new entrants, and the huge range of different entry abilities is astounding... some children can't hold a pencil, or don't know all the letters/ sounds, so its a fab place to start! We start with alphabet songs, poems and me modelling a story. You are blessed with parent helpers :) good luck!

Depending of the level of your top group you may be able to form a mixed ability group or pair the children together and have them work on a task as the top student can assist the lower student. Especially if you become stuck with parent helpers on a day here and there.

I also have kindy this year. I have been doing literacy group rotations that I have established from the get-go, so students get used to moving around in groups.

I have one group doing oral activities including vocab and sentence structures (which helps with writing) and other groups doing sight words/letter of the week games. You can establish similar rotational groups specifically for writing- each group having a specific goal- eg one group might practise handwriting, another group writing vocab words, another group writing sentences using sight words. 10 mins a rotation to keep things explicit, short and sharp!

I would determine weekly or fortnightly writing goals for each group, and rotate yourself to a different group every day. If you have parents to help everyday, set them up with a mini-lesson/goal for their group, if not - you may be able to get the students to work independently on their group goal.

Good luck!

  • I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
