Beginning Teacher - well sort of

I am hoping for some advice from my fellow colleagues!

I graduated from Uni a few years back - but started a family since then - so am yet to actually teach in my own classroom (have done VERY sporadic relief).

My uni experience was also all over the place - with half being completed straight out of high school ten years ago - and then other half just prior to graduation (got a business degree in the middle there!).

So, with some of my uni subjects being completed over 10 years ago, and without the chance to 'get in there and learn' since graduation - I am feeling very poorly about my skills and abilities in the classroom.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to re-boost my teaching knowledge and get back in there - before ACTUALLY getting back in there? Online PDs? (I live in remote WA), MUST READ books?, other practical ideas?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

Hi,

email me at jhoansen@optusnet.com.au

and I will send you a book list. You can then buy them online, new or secondhand. Things are changing very quickly and a web search into your learning area will soon bring up heaps of new material. The big changes due in the next year or so are in Early Childhood Ed. Although I feel that there is need for big changes in many areas if we are to see all our kids getting a good start in life.

Hi - I think most teachers, no matter how well qualified, will agree that they share some degree of anxiety when starting in a new setting or going 'back-to-work' after a break. Apart from the reading and PD you can catch up on before you start I think the best advice you can get about your new post will be from staff at the new setting itself. Try and get as much information about the routines, the curriculum, the environment and the number of children you will be teaching, your classroom, resources and materials which will be available to you.. or not available as the case maybe!

If it is possible, try and sit in on one of your colleagues classes just to get an idea of how the classes are run - if not DON'T PANIC! Once 'you're in there' just let yourself take control and 'do' the job you're there to do - you are qualified... and you will do a great job :)

Here is a link to a really helpful website where you can download vidoes and see everything from behavioural problems, classroom mangagement and learning/teaching issues... or just polish up on those skills where you feel you might need help -good luck and ENJOY... it's catching!

Back to the workforce

Any chance of volunteer work in a local school? That would help get the feel for young children again and some idea of the new technology available.
